REVEALING SECRETS – The Secrets Project

I ask people to trust me and share a secret. It can take place in a museum or gallery, at someone’s home, or in my studio. On the spot, I translate their intimate thoughts into a drawing, which the storyteller receives in a sealed envelope. I have performed this project at the Stadsschouwburg in Rotterdam and later at the Wtf Gallery in Bangkok, Thailand. It’s incredibly special how intimate the secrets I hear are. The core of it is the personal connection between me and you. I always sincerely assume that it is a real secret; this sharing of a personal secret from person to person stands in stark contrast to the current age (Facebook, Instagram, Tinder, anonymous internet trolls), and it is precisely why it is more necessary than ever today. This can be done in any language. Barriers in language and culture are broken down through non-verbal communication. In fact, not understanding every word gives me the space for a broader interpretation and more freedom in drawing.
