For me, Albert Schweitzer is a role model for several reasons. On one hand, he was a double talent — first a musician and then a doctor. On the other hand, he embodies the heroism that surrounds all doctors. It’s also worth noting that the word arts in English means art, while in Dutch, it refers to a doctor. Schweitzer was the first recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, and today, in light of the rise of right-wing extremism following the victories of Trump and Musk, his example feels especially relevant again.

Schweitzer’s ability to blend intellectual disciplines and his deep sense of compassion for humanity make him a timeless figure, particularly now when the world could use more examples of courage and humanitarianism.
