Red Hat’s Swiss slave hunters
€475,00
During the slave period, the rich Dutchmen massively used Swiss mercenaries to hunt down the fled Maroons. Some Swiss fought with a red hat on. I have made many works of art around the slavery past, especially in Suriname and Aruba.
“During slavery in the “West”, Dutch slave owners deployed +- 1200 Swiss mercenaries on a large scale to hunt down the escaped slaves, the Maroons. They wore their uniforms made of felt (imagine how hot and awkward in the tropics, hundreds have died of tropical diseases.) Many farmers’ sons from the mountains were also active in the Netherlands Antilles and in Suriname.
I had come up with a big project around this theme, in which every child had received a historical art book about their history, but no chance of getting a subsidy for this.”
